Description
When Queen Victoria was 13, she sat for designer William Wyon, who proceeded to create the iconic 1838 Young Head portrait. This design was beloved by the Queen and appeared on many coins throughout her reign. In 1847, to celebrate 10 years on the throne, Her Majesty asked Wyon for a new design. With the help of Scottish artist William Dyce, he created the now legendary Gothic Crown coin. Only 8000 were produced in 1847 and today it remains one of the most celebrated coins ever produced.
The OBVERSE of 2022 St. Helena Gold Gothic Crown Coins features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. This design came from Jody Clark in 2015 and depicts Her Majesty wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown. This design represents the first time in over a century that a Royal Mint engraver was petitioned to make a definitive portrait for British coinage.
The REVERSE side of the 2022 2 oz Proof Gothic Crown Coin features the iconic cruciform image originally designed by Dyce and engraved by Wyon. The design consists of four shields representing the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom. In the background, we see symbolic flowers of the United Kingdom’s four nations, England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. In the very center, we see the Order of the Garter arms. Ornate Latin inscriptions are found along the border of the coin.
