Description
The Jewelled Horse 2021 10oz Gold Proof Coin by the Perth Mint is part of a series of jewelled collector coins dedicated to Chinese culture and features a horse – the symbol of vitality, power and nobility.
The Mint says about the coin:
“The Jewelled Horse is The Perth Mint’s most prestigious release of the year. In common with similarly magnificent and rare pieces celebrating animals significant in Chinese culture, the new coin combines the incontestable beauty of pure gold and Argyle pink diamonds in the numismatic embodiment of equine vitality, power and nobility.
For collectors of exclusive objets d’art, The Jewelled Horse is an Australian numismatic masterpiece of mesmerising style and sophistication.
Obverse
The obverse of the coin depicts the crowned old bust of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the “Fifth Portrait” worldwide but “Sixth Portrait” in Australia, where the Queen’s portrait by Vladimir Gottwald was fifth).
The Queen also wears the Coronation Necklace; originally made for Queen Victoria in 1858, it was also worn at the coronations (as Queen’s Consort) of Queen Alexandra in 1902, Queen Mary in 1911 and Queen Elizabeth (the Queen mother) in 1937.
Unlike on British coinage, the effigy is “uncouped” (includes the Queen’s shoulders). In small letters on the left, the artist’s initials JC (for Jody Clark).
Running continuously around the rim is the monarch’s legend, the date of issue and the face value: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 10oz 9999 GOLD 2021 2000 DOLLARS.
The inscription around the rim also incorporates the precious metal content, 10oz 9999 GOLD (ten ounces of 99.99% gold).
Obverse Inscription ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 10oz 9999 GOLD 2021 2000 DOLLARS
Reverse
The reverse of the coin depicts a standing horse with a flowing mane, below a branch of Jasmine flowers, against a background of undulating countryside with nearby hills topped by pagodas.
The figure of the horse is three-dimensional, sculpted in 18-carat (75.35%) rose gold. It is hand set with approximately 2.76 carats of Fancy Intense to Vivid Pink / Purplish Pink diamonds totalling 0.01ct. Two golden coloured diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine represent the horse’s eyes.
Around above, the inscription THE JEWELLED HORSE. To the right of the horse, the Chinese character for horse: 馬.
Below that and to the right, the P mint mark of the Perth Mint. The designer’s initials AH (for Aleysha Howarth) are in the lower left.
