Description
The 2020 UK One Ounce Gold Year of the Rat coin is part of the Royal Mint’s Shengxiao (Chinese Zodiac) Collection. The lunar Year of the Rat begins on 25th January, 2020.
This 24 carat gold coin has a fineness of 999.9% and contains one troy ounce of gold. As British Legal Tender, the coin is exempt from capital gains tax.
Royal Mint Lunar Coins
The rat (or mouse) is actually the first animal in the lunar cycle. The Royal Mint did not start to produce lunar coins until 2014, with the Year of the Horse, so the rat is only mid-way through their series.
Year of the Rat
Those born under the Year of the Rat / Mouse are said to be successful, clever and content with living a quiet life. Other years of the rat include 2008, 1996, 1984, 1972, 1960 and 1948.
OBVERSE
The obverse was designed by Jody Clark. It shows the fifth coinage effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
REVERSE
The reverse was designed by P.J. Lynch. It shows a rat amongst some foliage. The designer said:
Rats are such intelligent creatures. I tried to reflect those qualities when I was making my designs for the Year of the Rat coin.
